The San Francisco 49ers and Trent Williams still haven’t reached a new deal.
There were rumblings about the Niners potentially trading or releasing their All-Pro left tackle if he didn’t agree to a restructured contract.
That’s why, with the deadline arriving and no imminent deal, they had to make a decision.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Niners didn’t exercise a $10 million contract bonus, but they’re still trying to get a long-term deal done.
The 49ers still want to keep Trent Williams
“With today’s 4 pm ET deadline looming, the 49ers are opting not to exercise the $10 million option bonus in Trent Williams’ contract, per sources. Williams’ salary cap number now will grow to close to $47 million, but the team is not overly concerned about it, and it still is planning to rework his contract before next month’s NFL Draft,” Schefter wrote on X.
Moreover, the Niners have decided to hold onto Williams, regardless of previous speculation, and will continue to work toward getting a deal done.
“Trent Williams and the 49ers have been discussing a new deal. They aren’t shopping him, and he’s not expected to be traded. That could change, but I don’t think it’s realistic right now,” Schefter reported during a March 10 appearance on “The Pat McAfee show.”
Williams is in the final year of a three-year, $82.6 million deal. While that’s much more than what the average 37-year-old offensive tackle makes, Williams is still one of the best blindside protectors in the league.
Injury concerns will always be a part of the equation, but he wouldn’t last two full days in free agency if the Niners were to release him.
For now, it looks like he’s not going anywhere.
