Could Aaron Rodgers replace quarterback Matthew Stafford if the Los Angeles Rams don’t give him a new contract?
While that sounds like an absurd hypothetical, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter explained that it might become a possibility if the Rams don’t solidify their future with Stafford.
“Aaron Rodgers, in my mind, would be thrilled with the idea of going to Los Angeles,” Schefter said on a Tuesday episode of his podcast. “And the Rams could probably get him at a lower cost than it would be for Matthew Stafford.”
The Rams’ top offseason priority should still be giving Super Bowl champion Stafford a new deal. But if that doesn’t happen and L.A. trades him, Rodgers would be a better alternative than backup QB Stetson Bennett.
Bennett — a fourth-round pick in 2023 — has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game in two seasons with the club. The Rams could re-sign free-agent QB Jimmy Garoppolo, but he hasn’t played an entire regular season since 2019 because of foot, shoulder and knee injuries.
The New York Jets recently confirmed they’re moving on from Rodgers, meaning he’ll probably be released and become a free agent. In 17 games in 2024, he had 3,897 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns posting a below-average 48 QBR.
Perhaps Rodgers could revive his career in Los Angeles. Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is the younger brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt. When Rodgers played for Matt LaFleur from 2019-22, he won two of his four MVPs.
Rodgers, 41, could be a one-year rental for the Rams. Thus, they would probably still need to draft a successor, perhaps Louisville QB Tyler Shough or Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart.
Stafford’s situation bears watching. If L.A. doesn’t keep him, it could create a domino effect — whether that includes Rodgers joining the Rams or not.
