With the recently hired New York Jets regime set to officially move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason, it was hardly a surprise to learn over the weekend that the Jets are “open to trading” wide receiver Davante Adams before the new league year begins on March 12.
For a piece published Monday, NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained why the Jets “won’t find a trade partner for” Adams and why the 32-year-old shouldn’t do his current employer any favors regarding a possible transaction.
“No one is going to pick up a contract that pays out $70M over the next two years,” Florio said about Adams’ situation. “And if a new team wants Adams to re-do the deal in order to facilitate a trade, Adams should decline, get cut and maybe get even more from that team (or another one) as a free agent. It’s highly unlikely that Adams will be traded. No one wants that contract. And Adams has no reason to change his contract.”
Additionally, many are assuming Adams will want to reach free agency so that he and Rodgers can become a package deal for a quarterback-needy club such as the New York Giants. Adams and Rodgers were first teammates with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 through the 2021 season, and the former orchestrated a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Jets this past fall.
In December, Adams insisted he had no regrets about making the move to the Jets so he could “play with one of my favorite quarterbacks” who is also “one of my best friends” even though Gang Green missed the playoffs.
For a piece published on Monday, Jets reporter Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic mentioned that Rodgers “funneling targets” to Adams over their 11 games together this past season “didn’t go over well with some” Jets players. With that said, Adams finished the campaign with 85 total receptions, 1,063 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. Such numbers indicate he could be a key contributor for a contender later this year.
It was said back in the middle of February that the San Francisco 49ers would probably have to release dual-threat offensive weapon Deebo Samuel rather than trade him this offseason. On Saturday, a report confirmed the 49ers had agreed to send Samuel to the Washington Commanders.
While history shows it only takes one interested team to make a seemingly unlikely trade a reality, it nevertheless appears the Jets will ultimately release Adams with a post-June 1 designation.
