Not long after Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett rescinded his offseason trade request and signed a four-year, $160M extension that included $123.5M guaranteed in March, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam publicly challenged him “to become a real leader of the team.” 

Thus, some wondered if Garrett was sending a somewhat subtle message when he suggested that he was enjoying a trip to Japan as the Browns opened the voluntary organized team activities portion of the offseason program.

During the latest episode of the “Orange and Brown Talk Podcast,” team insider Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer shared why head coach Kevin Stefanski and others likely aren’t losing sleep about Garrett’s whereabouts. 

“Myles has really, truthfully, whether we like it or not, a little bit of a different set of rules than everybody else,” Cabot explained. “And he has kind of earned that by being the best defensive player in the NFL, by earning NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023, by being on the road to the Hall of Fame and by getting himself ready every single year to go out there and dominate.” 

Cabot referenced how current North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick previously revealed that legendary coach Bill Parcells essentially had a unique set of “rules” for New York Giants icon and Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. Taylor is widely regarded as the greatest overall defensive player in NFL history:
