According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers plan on releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday. The Philadelphia Eagles have quickly emerged as a potential landing spot for the two-time Pro Bowler, but would it be a smart move?
Pro: Fills a hole left by Darius Slay
Slay was a key piece of Philadelphia’s 2024 defense that ranked first in the NFL in points allowed and yards per pass allowed, but he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released earlier this offseason. Kelee Ringo and Adoree’ Jackson are set to battle it out for a starting cornerback spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell. If the Eagles don’t feel confident in either player, Alexander would be a big upgrade to the CB2 spot.
Con: Alexander’s injury history
Teams don’t love to commit cap space to injury risks, and Alexander fits the bill in that regard. The 28-year-old missed at least 10 games in three of his last four seasons with the Packers. He did make the Pro Bowl in each of his last two healthy seasons in 2020 and 2022, but it’s hard to trust him to stay on the field.
