Boxing legend Ricky Hatton’s cause of death has been ruled as suicide by a coroner’s court, per ESPN.
Hatton died at the age of 46 after his manager, Paul Speak, found him “unresponsive” in his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sept. 14.
The details of Hatton’s death were told to the Stockport Coroner’s Court during a brief 10-minute hearing, which was adjourned until March 20 by Alison Mutch, senior coroner for Manchester South.
“The provisional cause of death is given as hanging,” Mutch said.
According to ESPN, the coroner’s court was told that Hatton was last seen by his family on Sept. 12 and appeared “well.” He didn’t attend an event as planned on Sept. 14, which prompted his manager to visit his house.
Known as “The Hitman” and “The People’s Champion,” Hatton held multiple championship titles at light-welterweight and one at welterweight. He was named the 2005 Fighter of the Year by multiple media outlets.
A memorial service was held at Manchester Cathedral last week and featured a long list of attendees to celebrate Hatton’s life, including boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
