Recently hired New York Giants
head coach John Harbaugh eventually settled on hiring former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the Giants’ gig after first-choice option Todd Monken became the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Back in January, Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes campaigned for Nagy to receive a second opportunity to serve as a head coach at the highest level. According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Mahomes also spoke with 2025 rookie Jaxson Dart about what the Giants signal-caller will experience while working under Nagy.

Jaxson Dart received “rave reviews” about working with Matt Nagy

“Dart, fresh off a rookie season with 24 total touchdowns and seven turnovers, talked on multiple occasions with Mahomes about working with Nagy, according to multiple sources close to the QB,” Raanan shared for a piece published on Friday. “He came away impressed. He also told reporters last week that he spoke with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce about his former coordinator and received rave reviews.”

Of course, Nagy won’t be the only member of Harbaugh’s staff tasked with turning Dart into an elite QB1 as soon as later this year. Former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator and former Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan will serve as the Giants’ quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator. Longtime offensive coordinator Greg Roman is also among the recognizable names who will be working under Harbaugh.

“A big selling point for Dart is that Nagy brings a quarterbacks perspective,” Raanan explained. “Nagy played professionally and worked his way up the coaching ladder as a quarterbacks coach. He speaks Dart’s language and should bring similarities to last year’s Giants offensive coordinator and playcaller Mike Kafka, who started his professional coaching career under [Chiefs head coach Andy Reid]. This should limit the change in scheme, terminology and play style, to some degree.”

How Matt Nagy is viewed around the NFL

Earlier this week, Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton insisted that Giants players and fans will love Nagy’s “aggressive” mindset and style. It seems like Nagy has a positive reputation among others within the NFL community who aren’t currently employed by the Chiefs.

“Multiple NFL assistants…told ESPN they were ‘high’ on Nagy as an offensive coach,” Raanan added. “They thought his passing schemes were solid and respected his X’s and O’s. Adding Roman, who has a lengthy track record of designing successful run games, was considered a strong complement.”

Of course, such comments will be forgotten by the time Dart takes his first meaningful in-game snap in Nagy’s offense. That said, it sounds like those familiar with Nagy believe he can help Dart make a massive leap as a second-year pro.
