FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed Tuesday that Donald Trump will be on the stage to help award the World Cup to the winners of this year’s tournament.
“We will be together with the president, enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” he said on Fox & Friends.
Last summer, Infantino arranged for the United States president to present the trophy for the newly formatted Club World Cup. That created a somewhat awkward scene as Infantino appeared to gesture for Trump to leave the stage, but he remained as Chelsea captain Reece James raised the hardware aloft.
“They told me that he (Trump) was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage,” James told Oliver Kay of The Athletic. “I thought he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay. And that probably highlights how big the tournament is.”
The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium, the site of Chelsea’s triumph a year ago.
