49ers cornerback Renardo Green was a full-time starter in 2025, but as he enters his third season, his spot may not be secure. Green will go into training camp “on the hot seat,” per Cam Inman of the Mercury News.
The 49ers spent a second-round pick in 2024 on Green, who went 64th overall after spending five seasons at Florida State. With fellow corner Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir and Isaac Yiadom also on the 49ers’ roster at the time, Green began his career as a backup. He wound up starting in seven of 17 games as a rookie and recording 61 tackles, 13 passes defensed, an interception and a forced fumble. Opposing quarterbacks managed a so-so 88.2 rating on 70 targets when Green was the nearest defender.
After losing Ward to the Colts and Yiadom to the Saints in free agency in 2025, the 49ers locked Green into a starting role opposite Lenoir. While working almost exclusively as a boundary corner for the second straight year, Green made 60 tackles and deflected 10 passes in 14 games. The 6-foot, 196-pounder didn’t pull in any INTs, but QBs posted a weak 80.0 rating on 69 targets when they threw his way. Although Green was successful in that regard, Pro Football Focus ranked Green an underwhelming 88th among 112 qualified corners in overall performance.
The 49ers briefly benched Green in the first quarter of their 41-6 divisional-round loss in Seattle, where cameras caught head coach Kyle Shanahan giving him an earful on the sideline (h/t: Alex Tran of Niners Nation). Shanahan was incensed after Green failed to drop deep enough on a second-and-20 play, resulting in 21-yard first-down completion from Sam Darnold to Cooper Kupp. A couple of months later, though, Shanahan spoke highly of Green at the NFL Annual League Meeting in March (via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area).
“Where you are in trouble is if I’m never challenging you and I’m never getting on you, because it really shows I don’t believe you can do any better,” Shanahan said. “And I think Renardo has done some really good things. He’s played at a starter level, and I have much higher expectations for him than that.”
Green will head into camp as an incumbent starter, but the 49ers added a few challengers in the offseason. In addition to bringing in veterans Nate Hobbs (one year, $3.5MM) and Jack Jones (one year, $1.22MM), they used a fourth-rounder on former Arizona and Washington corner Ephesians Prysock.
Hobbs has experience on the outside and in the slot, where 2025 third-rounder Upton Stout spent his rookie season. Most of Hobbs’ contract ($3.11MM) is guaranteed, which seems to give the former Raider and Packer the leg up on a roster spot. Meanwhile, despite combining for 33 starts with the Raiders and Dolphins from 2024-25, Jones did not secure any guaranteed money in his 49ers contract. Jones has taken the vast majority of his NFL snaps as an outside corner, which was also the case for the 6-foot-3 Prysock during his four college seasons.
Considering the significant investment they made in Green a couple years ago, it would be ideal for the 49ers if he keeps his starting job and emerges as a ball hawk in 2026. That would go a long way in helping San Francisco improve on last year’s paltry INT total (six), which tied for the second-fewest in the league.
