Daniel Jones is in position to fully participate in the opening practices of the Colts’ training camp. He is not the only core player with a clean bill of health entering the summer.

Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner has passed his physical, Mike Chappell of Fox59 notes. As a result, a stint on the active/PUP list will not be required in this case. Receiver Alec Pierce and linebacker CJ Allen are set to miss at least some time early in camp, but it is of course a positive development that Buckner is medically cleared.

Surgery was required in December on a herniated disc. The ailment limited Buckner to just 10 games last season and he did not participate in any practices during OTAs or minicamp this spring. Being available for on-field work this summer will be key for the three-time Pro Bowler, who has aimed to suit up for Week 1 throughout the offseason. Having Buckner back in the fold will represent a boost for the Colts in general after they dealt with a slew of injuries down the stretch last year and the team’s defensive interior in particular.

Over the course of his six-year run in Indianapolis, Buckner has been a mainstay along the D-line. The 32-year-old is a pending 2027 free agent, however. His ability to not only remain healthy this fall but also return to his previous form will be critical as a result. Buckner joins running back Jonathan Taylor and guard Quenton Nelson as core Colts players without a deal beyond the coming season as things stand.

To no surprise, Chappell adds the team will ease Buckner back into action as training camp gets underway. A cautious approach would be best for all involved given the nature of the All-Pro’s injury and his importance to the Colts. Nevertheless, today’s news is a strong indication Buckner will indeed be available in time for the fall.
