The Kansas City Chiefs will open the preseason portion of their calendar with a home game versus the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 15.
Some previously wondered if Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could take some snaps against the Rams as part of his ongoing recovery from the torn ACL and torn LCL that he suffered on Dec. 14, 2025. While speaking with reporters on Friday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid suggested he has made a final decision about Mahomes’ status for the Rams game.

“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams],” Reid said about Mahomes, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Percentages are leaning that way.”
Mahomes attempted passes in preseason games every year from 2021 through 2025 (the NFL scrapped preseason contests in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player was more recently fully cleared to participate in training-camp practices, and the Chiefs reportedly “are fully expecting” Mahomes to be in the lineup for their Week 1 “Monday Night Football” home game versus the rival Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
That said, it’s hardly a surprise that Mahomes won’t be rushed back into action for the Rams game.
Will Patrick Mahomes play at all during the preseason this month?
The Chiefs will play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 22, and Kansas City will then wrap the preseason up with a home game against the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 28. It sounds like Mahomes’ availability for those contests has not yet been finalized.
“I don’t know if I’ll play him the second or third game,” Reid added about Mahomes. “I don’t know that, but the percentages likely lean against doing that. We’ve got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work, and so the more reps they get, the better.”
Chiefs fans who want Mahomes to stay as healthy as possible through the start of the “MNF” matchup versus Denver will likely have little problem with Reid’s handling of the star quarterback.
