The Detroit Lions hope starting quarterback Jared Goff remains healthy in 2026 more than they did previously.
On Sunday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed backup QB Teddy Bridgewater is “stepping away” from the team. Shortly after Campbell’s announcement, the franchise confirmed it’s placing the 33-year-old passer on the reserved/retired list (an NFL roster designation used when a player retires while under contract; Bridgewater had signed a one-year deal with the team). Detroit’s QB room now looks much thinner without the 2014 first-round pick.

Reliable backup QBs are the NFL equivalent of a spare tire. Teams never want to use one, but they’re grateful when they have one. Bridgewater has kept many teams from going off course during his 11-year career with seven teams, including the Lions, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.
Bridgewater, a former Louisville Cardinals star, has a 33-32 starting record in the regular season and has completed a solid 66.3 percent of his passes for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions. His best work came with the Saints in 2019. Bridgewater replaced Hall of Famer Drew Brees (right thumb), going 5-0 in five starts and tossing nine TD passes and two interceptions. Without steady play from Bridgewater, the Saints may not have gone 13-3 and won the NFC South.
