Monday saw the Chiefs continue with their training camp practice schedule. It also marked the return of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to the team.
Bieniemy temporarily stepped away from the Chiefs late last month after his wife was hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Mia Bieniemy was allegedly shot by her and Eric’s son Elijah. Mia is still recovering at this time, while Elijah remains in custody in Loudoun County, Virginia.
“Mia continues to improve, which is important,” head coach Andy Reid said (via ESPN’s Nate Taylor) on Friday. “We’re heading in the right direction. When [Eric Bieniemy] gets back, he gets back here. But I know he’s chomping at the bit — and Mia is probably wanting to get him out of there, too.”
Eric Bieniemy is indeed now back in the fold after missing 11 training camp practices. That is certainly an encouraging sign with respect to his wife’s prognosis, and it will be welcomed news by the Chiefs. The veteran coach returned to Kansas City during this year’s hiring cycle, setting up a second OC stint following a tenure with the team which lasted from 2013-22.
Pass-game coordinator Joe Bleymaier had been handling offensive coordinator duties on an interim basis while Bieniemy was away. It seems that arrangement will now be ending, though. Bieniemy will look to reprise his role as a key figure on the Chiefs’ staff as the team seeks a needed rebound on offense compared to 2025. Kansas City’s efforts on that front will once again include a full-strength coaching staff.
