Training camp and the preseason roll on around the NFL, and recent days have continued to produce a number of interesting developments. In case you missed any of this week’s top stories, here is a quick recap:
- Bucs, Vea Reach Resolution: The standoff between Vita Vea and the Buccaneers came to an end thanks to an extension agreement. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle agreed to a one-year, $30MM deal. Taking into account the 2026 money which remained on his previous pact, Vea is now in line to collect $48MM over the next two seasons. A trade request and decision to avoid training camp led to uncertainty regarding the 31-year-old’s future, but Tampa Bay turned aside interest from suitors. To no surprise, a short-term raise is now in place along with a deal running through 2027. Vea’s tenure with the Bucs is set to continue for at least a ninth and 10th season.
- Miller Lands Cowboys Deal: Von Miller did not manage to line up a reunion with one of his former teams during free agency this spring. The future Hall of Famer also expressed a desire to play for the Cowboys in 2026, though, and that will indeed be the case. Miller has inked a one-year deal with Dallas carrying a base value of $5.5MM. The 37-year-old can earn another $2MM via incentives in his 15th NFL campaign. After a nine-sack outing with the Commanders last season (recorded while handling a rotational role), the DeSoto, Texas native will be expected to contribute in the pass rush department early and often on his latest team.
- Allen Chooses Colts: The Colts‘ efforts to add a veteran receiver resulted in a deal being struck with Keenan Allen. The six-time Pro Bowler agreed to a pact with Indianapolis covering 2026. Allen will collect at least $3.32MM this season, but another $5MM in incentives are present in his newest contract. This Colts agreement will allow for a reunion between Allen and head coach Shane Steichen after the two overlapped with the Chargers. Indianapolis traded away Michael Pittman Jr. this offseason, and Allen will look to offer a veteran presence at the WR spot. A regular role on offense would come as no surprise even in Allen’s age-34 season, and strong secondary production could go a long way in allowing the Colts’ offense to replicate its success from early in the 2025 season.
- Chubb Retires: Last year, Nick Chubb made 15 appearances but he was again unable to regain his pre-2023 form. A massive knee injury suffered in that season has helped result in the acclaimed running back retiring from the NFL. Chubb collected four Pro Bowl nods in his first five campaigns, establishing himself as one of the league’s top rushers and the focal point of Cleveland’s offense along the way. The Georgia product sits third in franchise history in rushing yards, but his tenure with the Browns ended last offseason. A one-year tenure with the Texans marked the end of his playing days. Chubb departs the NFL at the age of 30 with roughly $41MM in career earnings.
- Penix To Resume Full Falcons Work: The 2026 offseason has slowly seen Michael Penix Jr. work his way back from an ACL tear. In recent weeks, the third-year passer took part in individual drills and seven-on-seven work but not full team practices. With full clearance for contact having been received, though, Penix is now able to participate in 11-on-11 practices. As a result, the former No. 8 pick will have a small window of time to truly compete with free agent signing Tua Tagovailoa for Atlanta’s starting quarterback spot. Regardless of how that plays out, Penix will at least look to enter 2026 with a clean bill of health ahead of his first campaign with a new Falcons’ decision-making group in place.
