In April, Spencer Rattler was mentioned as a potential trade candidate given Tyler Shough‘s status as the Saints’ starting quarterback. Both young passers remain in the fold in advance of Week 1, and that can be expected to continue.
Prior to swinging today’s trade for Quinn Ewers, the Jaguars expressed interest in Rattler. It appears they were not the only team to do so. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports New Orleans received calls about Rattler this offseason. The Saints plan on retaining the 2024 fifth-rounder at this time, Fowler adds.
Rattler made six starts as a rookie and then another eight last season. Midway through the campaign, however, he was overtaken on the depth chart by Shough. Second-year head coach Kellen Moore did not stage a competition between the two this spring. Instead of receiving a fresh start via a trade, Rattler is in place to continue in New Orleans despite a path back to the QB1 gig not existing.
Two years remain on the Oklahoma/South Carolina product’s rookie contract. Rattler is in position to remain the Saints’ backup, depending on how things play out with 2025 acquisition Zach Wilson. New Orleans’ quarterback group was thinned out to an extent earlier today when Hunter Dekkers was waived. It will be interesting to see if Wilson remains in the fold through cutdowns tomorrow.
At the age of 26 (as of September), Rattler could be seen as a passer with upside from the perspective of teams seeking quarterback additions. Further calls could certainly be made closer to the trade deadline or the start of the 2027 league year. For now, however, a third season with New Orleans is in store.
