The Cowboys cut running back Jaydon Blue on Sunday, but the second-year man is staying in the NFC East. Blue is joining the Eagles’ practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The speedy Blue entered the 2025 draft after a productive junior season at Texas, where he ran for 730 yards on 5.4 per carry, pulled in 42 receptions and scored 14 touchdowns. Blue stayed in the Lone Star State when the Cowboys took him in the fifth round, but it went down as a wasted pick for them.
A frequent healthy scratch as a rookie, Blue played just five games and rushed for 129 yards and a TD on 38 carries (3.4 per attempt). He also only caught one pass for 5 yards.
Cowboys starter Javonte Williams amassed 1,201 rushing yards during a career-best season in 2025, leading the team to award him a three-year, $24MM payday in February. While that agreement locked Williams in as the Cowboys’ No. 1 option, Blue could have earned a complementary role this summer. However, after he lost the backup competition to Malik Davis, Dallas decided Blue was expendable.
The 22-year-old Blue may also have trouble finding playing time in Philadelphia, whose running back depth chart includes star starter Saquon Barkley, capable No. 2 Tank Bigsby and core special-teamer Will Shipley. For the Eagles, though, there is no harm in taking a practice squad flier on a player they liked coming out of college. As Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 WIP notes, the Eagles hosted Blue on a “30” visit in the run-up to draft. They now have him in the fold a year later.
