Minnesota was among the teams to keep four quarterbacks after the cutdown deadline, but the Vikings adjusted their roster Monday by waiving Max Brosmer. However, the 2025 UDFA remains in the team’s plans.
The Vikes brought Brosmer back via a practice squad deal after he cleared waivers, The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero tweets. Brosmer will work as the team’s de facto fourth-string option — behind Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz and J.J. McCarthy.
Amid a dreadful year across the board for Vikings quarterbacks, Brosmer made two cameos. His start against the eventual Super Bowl champion Seahawks went terribly, with the QB throwing four interceptions in a blowout loss. He then took seven sacks and threw for only 51 yards in Week 17 against Lions, though the Vikings managed a 23-10 that supplied one of the season’s most unusual box scores.
Even as the Vikings brought in Murray and re-signed Wentz, they remained bullish on Brosmer. A New Hampshire starter who transferred to Minnesota in 2024, Brosmer did not spend any time on the Vikes’ practice squad last season. The team opted not to pass the UDFA through waivers, carrying the rookie on its 53-man roster throughout the season. Murray’s arrival changed this plan, and Brosmer did not appear in much danger of being claimed today. That will lead to more developmental time in Minnesota.
Brosmer did complete 66.2% of his passes as a rookie, but that connect rate came on a nonfunctional 4.6 yards per attempt. Brosmer, 25, carried a similar completion rate with the Golden Gophers in 2024, averaging 7.0 yards per attempt and finishing his lone Big Ten year with an 18:6 TD-INT ratio.
After quickly losing the starter battle to Murray, McCarthy soon felt heat from Wentz at the QB2 slot. Two years remain on the Michigan product’s first-round contract. Unless the Vikes choose to cut the cord via trade, they will have three-man QB room on their active roster. If McCarthy is moved, Brosmer would be the team’s QB3 — a role he held entering last season — once again.
