The waiver wire was busy during the period immediately following recent roster cuts. Several claims wound up being made earlier this week, but few players drew interest from more than one team.
A notable exception on that front was cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Luter drew claims from the Titans, Dolphins, Cowboys and Colts after being let go by the 49ers. The Raiders ultimately won out given their place at the top of the waiver priority.
Per Yates, no other player who was cut during the weekend was the subject of more than two waiver claims. Luter represented a notable outlier on that front, and it is interesting no trade was worked out with San Francisco given the market which clearly existed in this case. Luter – who has one year remaining on his rookie contract – will look to carve out a defensive role in Vegas for 2026.
The Dolphins took the highly unusual route of claiming seven players off waivers Monday; two defensive backs were among them. Luter, 26, was a target for Miami as part of the team’s rebuild. The former fifth-rounder might have had a clearer path to playing time with the Dolphins than he would have in the event of a Tennessee, Dallas or Indianapolis claim. In any case, his usage in Vegas will be key in determining his market next spring.
Luter primarily operated on special teams during his first two 49ers campaigns. Last season, though, the South Alabama product logged three starts and saw his defensive snap share rise to 25%. Luter will presumably see a regular third phase workload on his new team, but the Raiders’ CB depth chart (featuring Eric Stokes, Taron Johnson and several recent draftees) could leave room for rotational snaps on defense as well.
