The Browns are signing free agent wide receiver Jimmy Horn, according to insider Jordan Schultz. Horn will join the Browns’ practice squad, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
The Panthers waived Horn on Tuesday after he committed a special teams error during their Week 1 loss to the Bears. Horn’s inability to secure a fair catch on a punt gave the Bears the ball at the Panthers’ 27 with 6:56 left in the second quarter. Although the Bears went three-and-out on that drive, they kicked a field goal to take a 24-21 lead. Chicago went on to a 59-37 victory in the highest-scoring opener in NFL history.
Horn, a 2025 sixth-round pick, played in 13 of the Panthers’ games as a rookie and caught 11 passes for 108 yards. The former South Florida and Colorado wideout has a notable Browns connection in backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders, his teammate with the Buffaloes from 2023-24. Horn combined for 95 catches, 1,008 yards and seven touchdowns during his 23-game stretch.
Three other teams showed heavy interest in Horn before he decided to reunite with Sanders in Cleveland, per Schultz. The Browns’ 53-man roster already includes six receivers, including Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion and Jerry Jeudy, making it unclear if they plan to elevate Horn in the near future.
The Browns happen to face the Panthers in Week 3, when Horn could potentially go up against the team that just cut him. It’s also possible Sanders will be under center by then, as starter Deshaun Watson’s years-long struggles continued during a 34-10 loss to the Jaguars in Week 1. Head coach Todd Monken is giving Watson the nod in Tampa Bay this week, but it seems like a matter of time until he loses his job to Sanders.
