The Giants are moving forward without starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is set to undergo knee surgery after tearing his meniscus and MCL in their Week 2 loss to the Rams.
Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed on Wednesday that Dart would miss the remainder of the regular season. He left the door open for the second-year passer to return in the postseason, should they get that far, per SNY’s Connor Hughes. Dart is facing a four- to six-month recovery, so getting back on the field for the start of the wild card round in mid-January would still be a stretch.
Jameis Winston will remain the starter with Jake Haener elevated to backup duties, but Harbaugh said (via The Athletic’s Dan Duggan) that the team would bring in another quarterback to add depth.
“All options are open,” he added (via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan), indicating that a trade was a possibility, too. Former Rams and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could be on the Giants’ list, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
New York is also facing an absence from one of their top players on the other side of the ball. Outside linebacker Brian Burns is expected to miss time with an ankle injury, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, though he is not expected to require surgery.
Burns, 28, has started all 36 games since arriving in New York via trade from the Panthers during the 2024 offseason. He put forth a solid Big Apple debut with career-highs of 71 tackles and eight passes defended as well as 8.5 sacks and 18 quarterback hits. The eight-year veteran leveled up last year, posting another round of career-highs with 16.5 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and 31 quarterback hits, earning his third Pro Bowl and first All-Pro (second-team) selection.
Burns had a quiet start to the 2026 season with just four tackles and one quarterback hit in his first two games. He said after Sunday’s loss (via Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith) that his ankle sprain was “nothing serious,” but today’s report indicates that Burns could be sidelined for multiple games. Harbaugh downplayed concerns, characterizing his star edge rusher as day to day, per Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacciano.
