As NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk/NBC Sports shared, veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was on the field for only three snaps of the New York Giants‘ 28-6 loss at the Los Angeles Rams this past Monday night.
Understandably, that caused some Giants fans to wonder if Beckham had already become surplus to requirements in the eyes of first-year New York head coach John Harbaugh. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, first-year Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy insisted that Beckham still has a role in what will be a new-look scheme.
Giants “slowly” trying to get Odell Beckham Jr. involved offensively
“Odell is — he does a lot of good things well,” Nagy explained, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “We’re trying to slowly package him into some things offensively.”
Beckham attracted zero targets over the first two games of the season, the second of which involved starting quarterback Jaxson Dart going down with a knee injury on the contest’s opening drive. Dart will be out of action through at least the rest of the regular season, and backup Jameis Winston is now on track to start when the 1-1 Giants host the 0-2 Tennessee Titans this coming Sunday.
Is Odell Beckham Jr. upset he was an afterthought over the first two weeks of the season?
One may think that Beckham, 33, would be upset about how his Giants reunion has thus far gone. On Thursday, Nagy suggested that isn’t the case.
“It’s not that he’s just a backup,” Nagy added about Beckham. “There’s times when, whatever it is, personnel-wise, we have it in the game plan, and we just didn’t get to it. You’ve got to be ready, one injury away from being in all the time. He knows that. He understands that.”
The Giants offense will undeniably have to change since Winston and Dart are different types of quarterbacks with different physical traits. Perhaps Winston will view Beckham as a sort of security blanket and look for the one-time Super Bowl champion early and often against the Titans at MetLife Stadium.
