Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he is hoping his latest trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers will have similar results to his 2025 deal for wide receiver George Pickens.

Jones discussed his decision to trade a 2027 sixth-rounder and 2028 second-rounder to the Steelers in exchange for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. during his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan.

“We hope that this is not only an improvement in, just generally, our personnel, but we hope it really can be one that he really finds his level,” Jones said.

Jones continued, “I would hope it would mirror maybe the George Pickens move that brought him in. I know that’s a pretty high bar, that’s pretty high expectations, but you have to have ’em to make a trade like this.”

There was a reported split between Pickens and Steelers leadership before he was traded to Dallas, where he recorded the best season of his career in 2025.

The Cowboys will now hope to see a similar resurgence from another disgruntled former Steelers player in Porter, who said he felt disrespected by failed extension talks with the franchise prior to his own trade.

After the trade, the Cowboys are set to select just four times in the 2027 draft. The Steelers are set to make nine picks, including three initially belonging to the Cowboys, per Tankathon.

Quarterback Dak Prescott said after the deal that “to make a win-now trade, it means a lot” to the Cowboys after a 1-2 start to the season (h/t The Athletic’s Jon Machota).

“It just shows you that this whole organization is on the same page. You’re thankful when you got guys at the top, the owners, making those decisions and not waiting,” Prescott said Thursday, per Machota.

Jones agreed with Prescott in his Friday radio appearance.

“He’s accurately got it pegged. It is a belief in where we are and what we can do right now,” Jones said.

The Cowboys are dealing with an injury-thinned secondary in which cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. have yet to practice this week due to injury.

Porter is still looking to make his season debut after sitting out the Steelers’ first three games with what the team reported was a back injury.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer said in his own radio appearance the Cowboys are “hoping” Porter can play Sunday but will wait to see how he feels after Friday’s practice.

The Cowboys are preparing for a Sunday afternoon road game against the winless Houston Texans. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET in Houston.
