The Detroit Lions are in an interesting situation right now, and if you’re a Motor City fan, it’s a bit of a downer.
This team was destined for the Super Bowl not long ago and was No. 1 in the NFC North just two seasons ago. Now, it is at the bottom of the NFC North like it was last season and is dropping games.
The Lions lost their “Sunday Night Football” matchup against the Carolina Panthers on the road, and that puts their record at 2-2. They’re in a competitive division, so 2-2 puts them at the bottom of the NFC North standings. Now, that loss to the Panthers has made them fall a lot in ESPN’s latest NFL power rankings.
Lions take a fall in ESPN’s power rankings
ESPN has released its official NFL power rankings ahead of Week 5, taking into account the Week 4 games. It was a given that the Lions would go down because that’s what happens when you lose a game, but they went down a few spots.
ESPN has them falling three spots. ESPN’s Eric Woodyard didn’t have much in-game reasoning in his summary for the week. Instead, he described the team as being entertaining, which is a positive way to look at it. But fans want to see wins, not entertainment when the Lions lose.
“Like the famous line from the 2000 film ‘Gladiator,’ you’re guaranteed some level of entertainment with this 2026 Lions team,” he notes in the story. “Detroit scored at least 31 points in three of four games while also allowing 30 or more points in each.”
He also shared a Dan Campbell quote after the Lions beat the New York Jets in Week 3.
“Tell you what, you’re coming to our games? You’re loving this now,” Campbell said. “I mean, these are exciting games. … Nobody’s leaving early. And that was the point. We’re not going to let anybody leave early this year.”
