George Pickens did not appreciate being put on the spot by his head coach.
Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer singled out Pickens after their Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The veteran coach challenged Pickens to have more of an impact in the run game by picking up safeties and blocking cornerbacks. Schottenheimer called it a “team-first mindset” that Pickens understands but needs to adapt to more.
Pickens was asked about the comments on Friday, and didn’t sound all that receptive to what was said.
“Well, I’m doing what they tell me to do,” Pickens told reporters when asked about Schottenheimer’s message. “So, do what they tell me to do.”
“I feel like if you narrow the comments down, you’re talking about the team,” Pickens said of needing to block more during run plays. “Most definitely, I feel like as a team, just keep improving.”
Schottenheimer’s decision to publicly call out Pickens was bold, to say the least. Pittsburgh Steelers fans vividly recall Pickens’ relationship souring with his previous team before he was eventually traded to Dallas.
Schottenheimer has so far gotten the best out of Pickens in their year-and-a-half together. Pickens tallied career highs across the board last season and has remained productive in Year 2 with 428 yards and a touchdown through six games.
