The Las Vegas Aces went deep into the archives to pull off some trolling after completing their sweep of the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals to win their third championship in four years.

Las Vegas’ social media team used a post on X from April 2020 in which the Mercury made a COVID-19 reference to joke about the Aces being one of the clubs to not win a title at that point to let them know they are now on a dynastic run.

The Mercury’s post was odd because it seems like the type of thing a team would post immediately after winning a championship, but they were coming off a 15-19 record and a first-round playoff loss during the 2019 season.

Granted, at the time of the post in April 2020, not a lot was happening in sports because of the pandemic and we were all trying to find ways to entertain ourselves.

The problem with posting through boredom, as the Mercury found out, is that sometimes the past can come back to bite you. Las Vegas’ ascent to the top of the WNBA hierarchy had already begun by that time after reaching the playoff semifinals in 2019 and finals in 2020.

It would take two more years before the Aces won their first title in 2022, but since then it has been a feast for the organization.

Making matters worse for the Mercury is the Aces’ third Finals win in the past four years now has given them the same number of titles as Phoenix. The two clubs are among four teams that have won three WNBA championships.

On top of that, the Mercury became the first team to be swept in the WNBA Finals since 2020 when the Aces lost in three games to the Seattle Storm.
