For years, fans and analysts raved about the quarterback class of 2026.
Fast forward to today, and it might not be nearly as impressive as they thought it would be. Most of the “can’t-miss” candidates missed, and there aren’t many true top-tier quarterback prospects about to enter the NFL.
That’s why, with Fernando Mendoza all but guaranteed to be the first player off the board, Alabama’s Ty Simpson wants to be the second quarterback taken.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Crimson Tide star has decided to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Ty Simpson will throw at NFL Scouting Combine
“Former Alabama QB Ty Simpson will throw at next week’s NFL combine, per source — an opportunity to solidify his status as a first-round pick,” Pelissero wrote on X. “Simpson is the consensus QB2 behind presumptive No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, who has said he’ll wait and throw at pro day.”
While that used to be the standard, sure-thing first-round quarterbacks have opted not to throw at the combine. Simpson, however, can’t afford to take any chances. He’s a polarizing prospect at best, and while he might still be taken in the first 32 picks, he needs any boost he can get.
He doesn’t have much experience as a starter, logging 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five picks while completing 64.5 percent of his passes last season. Tankathon has him going to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 21, but NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah has him as a second-rounder, so there’s still no clear consensus on where he should be taken.
