Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter playing both ways in the NFL seems unlikely, but some teams aren’t ruling out the idea.
On Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said they’re evaluating Hunter (6-foot, 188 pounds) at both positions. New York has pick No. 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft, scheduled April 24-26 in Green Bay.
“Well, it takes a long time to evaluate because there’s a lot of tape,” Daboll told the media. “It’s really remarkable what he has done and the ability to perform at that level, not really getting rest. So he’s been a fun player to evaluate and meet and talk with. He’s a heck of a player.”
At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Titans head coach Brian Callahan said it’s “very realistic” that Hunter could continue to be a two-way star in the NFL. (Tennessee has pick No. 1 in the draft.)
The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner excelled at CB/WR during his final season with the Buffaloes. In 13 games, he defended 11 passes and intercepted four. On offense, he had 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdown catches.
He played 1,552 snaps (753 offensive, 776 defensive and 23 special teams) last season, according to Pro Football Focus. That rate seems unsustainable in the NFL.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, a former linebacker, would occasionally line up at tight end when he starred for New England for eight seasons. Even so, he suggested he would make Hunter choose one position if the Patriots selected him with pick No. 4.
“We’ve never seen a player necessarily do it,” Vrabel told the media Monday. “I think there’s some things he can improve on by probably concentrating on just one position. But never going to put restrictions on Travis or any player.”
Perhaps Hunter will switch to full-time corner and play spot duty at WR. Unlike wideouts, most NFL teams don’t have packages for CBs.
Hunter’s position in the NFL should remain a storyline throughout the offseason. Regardless, the team that drafts him may be landing a rare prospect.
