Multiple members of The Backstreet Boys are lobbying for the opportunity to perform at halftime of Super Bowl LXI next year, along with other popular musical acts from the 1990s and 2000s.
According to People.com’s Meredith Wilshere, Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean said, “I just started an online petition on behalf of the group for us to do halftime 2027. You better vote yes for us to do halftime, especially because it’s gonna be in Los Angeles at SoFi next year. That’s home for me and [fellow Backstreet Boys member] Kevin [Richardson], so that would be pretty awesome.”
Another Backstreet Boys member, Nick Carter, suggested making it something of an ensemble with Britney Spears and fellow ’90s and 2000s boy bands NSYNC and 98 Degrees.
Carter added, “We’re biased because we really think that our era of music, coming from the late ’90s, early 2000s, is probably some of the most nostalgic for people and makes people feel good. We’re part of a club of all those artists that you’d have to bring them back.”
Per Wilshere, The Backstreet Boys turned down the opportunity to be part of the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show in 2001, opting instead to sing the national anthem.
Spears and NSYNC performed during halftime of that Super Bowl, along with Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige and Nelly.
This year, Bad Bunny was the halftime performer, following another modern musician in rapper Kendrick Lamar, who performed last year.
Per USA Today‘s Jack McKessy, Bad Bunny’s performance averaged 128.2 million viewers, making it the third-most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history.
However, the NFL has not shied away from choosing acts that were popular in the 1990s and 2000s, such as Usher in 2024, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020 and a combination of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Mary J. Blige in 2022.
The Backstreet Boys have similar appeal to those performers with the 35-to-50-year-old demographic, and if the NFL wants to satisfy that portion of the Super Bowl viewership, The Backstreet Boys are undoubtedly worth considering.
