UNC head coach Bill Belichick is adding another quarterback ahead of his second season with the Tar Heels.
Western Carolina transfer Taron Dickens has signed with North Carolina, On3’s Pete Nakos reported Sunday.
Dickens now joins Billy Edwards, Miles O’Neill, Au’Tori Newkirk and Travis Burgess as one of the quarterbacks competing for playing time with UNC next season.
The quarterback redshirted his freshman 2023 season at Western Carolina before playing 16 games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
He recorded a career passing percentage of 74 percent for 5,063 yards and 51 touchdowns across three seasons with WCU.
Dickens is coming out of a historic redshirt sophomore season in which he set an NCAA single-game record with 46 consecutive completions in an Oct. 4 win over Wofford.
He ultimately finished out Western Carolina’s 23-21 win over Wofford having gone 53-for-56 with 378 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Dickens had completed four straight passes in the game prior, setting another NCAA single-season record with his streak of 50 straight completions.
Dickens finished the campaign having set school single-season record with 3,508 passing yards in nine contests.
He finished the season having placed second in voting for the Walter Payton award, the honor given to the top offensive player in the FCS, after leading the division with 389.8 passing yards per game and 38 touchdown passes while recording just two interceptions.
Dickens is the third transfer quarterback to sign with the Tar Heels this season, joining Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. and Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill.
UNC also has Newkirk, a class of 2025 signing who served as the Tar Heels’ third-string quarterback last season, and 2026 signing Burgess on the roster.
The Tar Heels are in the process of revamping their offensive under new OC Bobby Petrino after averaging just 19.25 points per game last season.
Belichick will now be tasked with determining which one of these quarterbacks can help the Tar Heels take a step forward after a 4-8 finish to his first campaign as an NCAA head coach.
