The Arizona Cardinals (6-5) have been quite the surprise in the NFC West this season.

They’re squarely in the NFC playoff picture with six games remaining, and running back James Conner has been a crucial component of their offense.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Arizona signed Conner to a two-year contract extension on Saturday.

He was scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, but the Cardinals decided it was best to keep their leading rusher of four seasons and continue building their budding offense.

Arizona is 5-1 in games where Conner has reached 100 yards rushing and 1-4 when he doesn’t. The team called him the “heart and soul of the Cardinals’ offense.”

Conner has racked up 705 rushing yards on 166 carries this year and is responsible for five touchdowns scored. He’s also tied with the Baltimore Ravens’ Derrick Henry for most missed tackles forced (71).
