Former Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley is in the hospital after suffering “severe” burns in an accident on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet, Texas, on Tuesday, per ESPN.
Shipley’s family released a statement through the Texas athletic department announcing that the 40-year-old “remains in critical but stable condition.” The accident occurred when a machine he was operating caught fire. The ranch workers drove him to a local hospital, and he was later transported to Austin for further treatment.
Shipley starred for the Longhorns from 2006 to 2009 and was one of the best receivers in program history, earning All-American honors twice. He set multiple single-season records, including 116 receptions and 1,489 receiving yards in 2009. His 248 career receptions rank first all-time in Texas program history, and he’s second in yards behind only Roy Williams with 3,191.
Shipley also excelled as a returner, with 19 career kickoff returns for 468 yards and one touchdown and 30 punt returns for 375 yards and three scores. He helped lead the Longhorns to the 2010 BCS National Championship Game and caught two touchdowns in a 37-21 loss to Alabama.
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Shipley in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft. He recorded 52 receptions for 600 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season. He played for two more years, spending time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars before retiring from the NFL in 2014.
