After winning Super Bowl LII, albeit injured on the bench, quarterback Carson Wentz was supposed to return to his starting position and lead a potential Philadelphia Eagles dynasty.

As fans well know, that didn’t happen and after three disappointing seasons Philadelphia traded him to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 first-round pick.

In addition to the two picks Philadelphia received from Indianapolis, the team flipped the 2022 first-rounder (among others) with the New Orleans Saints for its 2022 first-rounder, a 2023 first-round selection plus three other mid-round picks ahead of the 2022 draft.

Sunday night saw Wentz return to the Super Bowl but this time backing up Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs’ sideline. Wentz was not victorious from the bench again this time but he was the key to Philadelphia’s 40-22 win, roughly four years in the making.

If it weren’t for the Wentz trade in 2021, the Eagles would not have acquired the draft assets necessary to acquire the key pieces to their Super Bowl LIX triumph.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith was drafted 10th overall in 2021, trading up two spots with the Dallas Cowboys by handing over the 12th pick and the 84th pick (Indianapolis’ third-rounder). He went on to score a game-sealing 46-yard touchdown on Sunday.
