The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t need much time to find their new head coach.
In fact, they didn’t even get to interview all of their prospective candidates, such as Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.
Getting Mike McCarthy was met with mixed reviews, with most fans thinking it wasn’t much of an upgrade after losing Mike Tomlin.
Notably, that includes franchise legend Le’Veon Bell, who took to social media to put the franchise on blast over this decision.
Le’Veon Bell isn’t a fire of Mike McCarthy
“4-13 incoming…but hey, at least Mike Tomlin isn’t the coach of the Steelers anymore right?” Bell wrote on X.
McCarthy had been a free agent since his contract with the Dallas Cowboys expired last season.
While he has Super Bowl pedigree, he’s drawn plenty of criticism for his game-management decisions and his lack of postseason success over the past decade.
More than that, it seems that the Steelers are once again avoiding a long-overdue rebuilding process.
They don’t seem to have a clear path to a franchise quarterback, and even if Aaron Rodgers comes back, he’s not going to be a long-term solution for the organization.
Signing McCarthy shows that the front office still believes they can compete at the highest level with this roster, even though all evidence suggests otherwise.
Only time will tell, but as things stand now, it feels like the Steelers may have jumped the gun with this hire, as they were reportedly the only team still interested in McCarthy,
