Kirk Cousins is facing an uncertain NFL future after he lost his starting job with the Atlanta Falcons last season, and one analyst thinks a reunion might make some sense for the veteran quarterback.
Cousins remains under contract with the Falcons, who signed him to a massive four-year, $180 million guaranteed contract last offseason. The expectation is that Cousins will eventually be released, and it is unclear if he will draw any interest as a starter.
If teams are only willing to offer Cousins a backup job, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes the Minnesota Vikings could be a potential suitor.
Jeremiah said during a Friday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he could see Cousins returning to Minnesota if the Vikings do not re-sign Sam Darnold. The idea would be for Cousins to act as an insurance policy behind J.J. McCarthy.
“J.J.’s gonna be the starter, but you have to have some veteran insurance there,” Jeremiah said. “First of all, (McCarthy) needs to stay healthy. With Kirk Cousins, I just thought it was a unique opportunity of somebody who, as you guys were mentioning, knows the offense inside and out. Atlanta’s footing the bill, so it’s gonna cost you next to nothing. He can literally play for the league minimum like Russell Wilson did last year. That’s why I thought that was a fascinating one.”
