The Los Angeles Chargers may hire former NFL head coach Adam Gase in an offensive assistant coach role, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is entering his third season with the Bolts. He has led L.A. to back-to-back 11-win seasons, both of which ended with AFC Wild Card playoff defeats.

Harbaugh made a change at offensive coordinator after the 2025 season, parting ways with Greg Roman and hiring former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

The 47-year-old Gase coached in the NFL from 2005-2020. He had stops at offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos (2013-2014) and Chicago Bears (2015) before becoming the Miami Dolphins’ head coach in 2016.

Gase’s Dolphins tenure started well, with his team going 10-6 and making the playoffs for the first time since 2008. However, they went 6-10 and 7-9 over the next two years, and the Dolphins parted ways with him.

The New York Jets then added Gase as their head coach. The 2019 squad started 1-7 but showed promise in the back half of the year, going 6-2 to finish 7-9. However, the 2020 team lost its first 13 games en route to a 2-14 season. Gase was let go after the year.

Gase hasn’t coached in the NFL since that season. He joined The 33rd Team as a strategic advisor in 2024.

If Gase returns to the NFL with the Chargers, he’ll work with a talented offense that includes quarterback Justin Herbert, offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, running back Omarion Hampton and wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
