A milestone arrived for Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff under unpleasant circumstances on Monday when he coached his 1,900th NHL game in a loss to visiting Florida, though it was just the third defeat for the Sabres in their last 15.
Ruff is the third coach in league history to reach 1,900, joining Paul Maurice (1,975) and Scotty Bowman (2,141). Now 65, Ruff played in the NHL from 1979-80 to 1990-91 and has coached with three teams (Buffalo, Dallas, New Jersey) since 1997-98.
Ruff added to his win total with a home victory over the Flyers on Wednesday.
