Over the past couple of months, the New England Patriots have been tangled up in trade rumors for A.J. Brown.
The Philadelphia Eagles seem reluctant to give up on him, and the Patriots signed former Green Bay Packers WR Romeo Doubs as an insurance policy.
That’s why Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated believes Mike Vrabel’s team is all set. In his latest column, he predicted that Doubs would break out as a true weapon. While the four-year, $70 million contract he got was a bit pricy, the Patriots may not need to make another addition to the WR corps.
Romeo Doubs might be the Patriots’ new WR1
“Romeo Doubs is going to shine with the Patriots. Doubs spent his first four years in Green Bay, where he was a consistent second option but was constantly fighting for targets alongside Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and others,” Verderame wrote. “Now he’ll be the clear-cut top option on the perimeter as New England moved off veteran Stefon Diggs.”
Doubs has shown glimpses of strong play, but the Packers’ passing game just had way too many mouths to feed. He’s worked on his ball-security issues, and he led the Packers in receptions (55), yards (724) and was tied for the most touchdowns (six) last season.
While not the most prominent name in free agency, he has the potential to be a primary weapon for the passing game. The Patriots might still pursue Brown if he ultimately becomes available, and there’s also a chance they bring Diggs back after releasing him. That said, even if that’s not the case, Drake Maye might be just fine with his new teammate.
