Pete Carroll has carved out a new spot for himself in NFL history.
Carroll will make his official return to the sideline on Sunday when his Las Vegas Raiders face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes, Carroll will officially become the oldest head coach in NFL history when the game kicks off.
Carroll, who will turn 74 on Sept. 15, surpasses Romeo Crennel, who was 73 when he last served as interim head coach of the Houston Texans in 2020.
Carroll was the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks from 2010-23. He led the team to the Super Bowl twice, including when it demolished the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII.
The Raiders have a new quarterback in place in Geno Smith, and they are hoping Carroll can turn things around for them fairly quickly. Las Vegas finished 4-13 last season and has not been to the playoffs since 2021.
Carroll, who also coached the New England Patriots and New York Jets for brief periods, has a career record of 170-120-1.
