The Super Bowl ring that originally belonged to former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress sold this week for a near-record price of $280K at Heritage Auctions.

It is the second-highest price that a Super Bowl ring has ever sold for, falling just short of the $300K price tag that former Baltimore Colts head coach Don McCafferty’s Super Bowl V ring went for in 2022.

Burress’ Super Bowl ring, which he received as part of the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII championship, is a fascinating piece of NFL history given his role in one of the biggest Super Bowl’s ever.

He was not only a prominent player on a championship winning team, he also caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the final minute of the game.

That catch also prevented the New England Patriots from completing a 19-0 season, handing them their first, and only, loss of the season.

It was the first of two Super Bowl wins for the Giants over Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Burress played 11 years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets.

He caught 553 passes for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns. He caught 244 passes and 33 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Giants.

He also missed two seasons in his career due to violation of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The New York Post also reports that the ring was put up for auction by an anonymous owner, and not Burress himself. That would suggest that Burress had already sold the ring himself for an undisclosed amount of money.
