The Detroit Lions are looking to change the competition landscape in the NFL — and it has nothing to do with banning the “tush push.”

As the league reviews its rules and bylaws for 2025, the Lions submitted an amendment to the NFL’s bylaws that reformats the playoffs so that wild-card teams with better records than division champions get higher seeding.

Currently, the NFL playoffs are structured so the No. 1–4 seeds are given to the best record holders among the North-, South-, East- and West-Division winners from each conference. Based on the records, the No. 5, 6 and 7 seeds are given to the remaining wild-card teams.

Wild-card teams are determined by the non-division winners with the best remaining records, but if a wild-card team has a better record than a division winner, it still can’t get one of the top-four seeds.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Lions’ proposal would still give the No. 1 seed to the division champion with the best record. The No. 2–7 seeds would be determined based on records and only factor in division-title winners to decide tie-breakers.
