With their quarterback situation remaining uncertain, perhaps the Pittsburgh Steelers should make a bold move during the 2025 NFL Draft.
Per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers will host Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders (6-foot-2, 212 pounds) on a top-30 visit on Thursday. Pittsburgh has pick No. 21 in the first round of the draft.
Teams can bring 30 prospects to their facility for a “top-30 visit.” It allows them to get to know players better.
The Steelers are pursuing free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers, but Pittsburgh should still consider drafting an understudy if it signs him. The 41-year-old posted a below-average 48 QBR in 17 starts with the New York Jets last season.
In free agency, the Steelers reunited with QB Mason Rudolph, who played for the Tennessee Titans in 2024. The Oklahoma State product seems like a bridge QB, as he has a 9-8-1 starting record in the regular season.
In his QB rankings, ESPN’s Jordan Reid rates Sanders as his QB2. However, the scouting community seems split on the 23-year-old.
“There are some evaluators who believe it’d be hard for the Browns or Giants to pass on picking a QB at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, but others have Sanders graded as a late first-round selection,” wrote Reid.
Sanders’ pinpoint accuracy may convince some teams he can emerge as a franchise cornerstone in the NFL. In two seasons with the Buffaloes, he completed 71.8% of his passes.
Sanders may slide out of the top three in the draft, but Pittsburgh would probably need to trade up to land him. ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested it may consider doing that.
“I think the only quarterback [the Steelers] would consider would be Shedeur,” Schefter said Monday on his podcast. “But I can’t imagine he’s gonna slide to 21. Would Pittsburgh be willing to trade up at a certain point to go get Shedeur Sanders, if he gets past those other spots?”
Trading up for a polarizing prospect in Sanders would carry risk for the Steelers, but it wouldn’t be unwarranted. They clearly need a long-term solution at QB, and Sanders’ upside seems tantalizing.
