The Dallas Cowboys must realize that ignoring the Chicago Bears’ request to interview head coach Mike McCarthy won’t make it disappear.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the Cowboys still haven’t replied to the Bears, who asked to speak with McCarthy on Monday.
Not permitting the Bears to interview McCarthy could signal the Cowboys are still considering re-signing the HC, whose contract ends on Jan. 14. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sounded unsure about McCarthy’s future after Sunday’s 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders.
“I don’t know that I’m considering making a coaching change is really what I’m trying to say,” Jones said in a 40-minute news conference, per ESPN’s Todd Archer.
McCarthy, meanwhile, told the media he “absolutely” wants to remain with Dallas.
The Cowboys seemingly lack a clear plan, so the Bears’ request probably caught them off guard. Still, Dallas should be more proactive.
If the Cowboys continue wasting time, they may miss the opportunity to court top head-coaching candidates. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel are already scheduled for multiple interviews.
It doesn’t seem fair to McCarthy, either. Even if the Cowboys don’t want to re-sign him, they should allow him to pursue other jobs. Making him wait could also sour his relationship with the organization.
It’s not surprising the Cowboys are procrastinating. Hours before their first game against the Cleveland Browns this season, they signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240M deal.
Dallas’ inability to make quick decisions may create distractions, which could be one reason the team seems to be regressing.
This season, the Cowboys went 7-10 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020. In three of their four previous seasons under McCarthy, they won 12 regular-season games three times.
