San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle during the early hours of Monday morning in an incident on Mission Street. The 27-year-old underwent surgery hours later and is expected to recover fully.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. on the 1700 block of Mission Street, just hours after the Super Bowl concluded at Levi’s Stadium.
San Francisco Police Department spokesman Evan Sernoffsky confirmed officers responded to the scene and transported White to a local hospital.
Police said a verbal altercation broke out between two groups inside a business, which led to the shooting. White was not believed to have been involved in that altercation, according to investigators.
“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” the 49ers said in a statement. “He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”
The injury is not considered life-threatening or career-threatening, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
