Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin have the opportunity to etch their names in the history books Tuesday by becoming the first mixed doubles duo to capture the gold medal for Team USA.
To get to Tuesday’s final, the duo had to overcome Italy’s Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner, winners of gold in 2022 and a team who defeated Dropkin and Thiesse early in the day. They came from behind to win the semifinal, 9-8, and set up their date with history.
Isabella and Rasmus Wranå of Sweden await the duo and may be the toughest test the Americans will face in these Olympics. High-scoring siblings, they are a threat to put significant points on the board, as seen in their 13-7 victory over Switzerland earlier in the tournament.
The Americans have already defeated the Swedish pair, but the gold medal game is an entirely different beast than the round robin play they previously matched-up in. Still, Thiesse and Dropkin are chasing history and has overcome expectations to this point. With momentum on their side, and history within reach, there is no reason to believe they cannot leave Tuesday’s match-up victoriously.
If the siblings Wranå can put up double-digit points, though, those gold medal aspirations take a significant hit.
Prediction: The Americans win gold
