New England Patriots rookie left tackle Will Campbell and second-year quarterback Drake Maye have received criticism following their nightmare performances in New England’s 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks
in Super Bowl LX.
Additionally, fans and media members have ripped Campbell after he declined interview requests and left the locker room shortly after this past Sunday’s game. Per Karen Guregian of MassLive, Campbell apologized on Tuesday for ducking reporters following the Super Bowl. The fourth overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft also spoke about being seen as a big reason the Patriots suffered a double-digit defeat in front of a worldwide audience.
Nobody more upset about Will Campbell’s play in Super Bowl than Will Campbell
“I mean, it comes with the job when you don’t perform,” Campbell explained, according to Mark Daniels of MassLive. “Obviously, I was picked high, paid a lot, so people expect a certain thing, and I expect more myself. So, whenever I don’t perform, I don’t expect everyone to be like, ‘It’s okay, buddy.’ I mean, obviously, it sucks, but it doesn’t suck for anyone more than it sucks for me.”
Previous stories mentioned that the 14 pressures Campbell surrendered against the Seahawks were the most allowed by an offensive lineman in any contest this season (postseason included) and the most allowed by a lineman in a playoff game since 2018. Meanwhile, Pro Football Focus shows that Campbell surrendered four sacks over New England’s four playoff games.
Maye was sacked six times and committed three turnovers during Super Bowl LX.
Will Campbell reveals the seriousness of his injury
Back in late November, Campbell suffered what was called a Grade 3 MCL sprain. He ultimately missed four games before he returned for New England’s regular-season finale, but he revealed on Tuesday that he wasn’t fully fit throughout the playoffs.
“It obviously wasn’t 100 percent,” Campbell said. “I mean, I don’t think when you tear a ligament in your knee, it’s not going to be how it was before, but I was healthy enough to go. I’m not going to say that it held me back, but yeah, it wasn’t the same as it was before, obviously. But I was good.”
Also on Tuesday, Maye voiced his support for Campbell. That said, it remains to be seen if Campbell or somebody else will be serving as Maye’s left tackle when training camp practices get underway this coming summer.
