To say that J.J. McCarthy’s first season as a starter for the Minnesota Vikings was a disappointment would be a massive understatement.
The former top-10 pick struggled to stay on the field, and while he showed flashes of strong play, the offense was tough to watch at times.
Notably, Justin Jefferson’s numbers clearly reflected that. The superstar wideout logged 1,048 yards, but his two touchdowns were the fewest in a season in his career.
Nevertheless, he’s still a fan of his signal-caller. In a quick-hitting session with Yahoo Sports, he had two interesting words to describe McCarthy.
Justin Jefferson is a fan of J.J. McCarthy
“Young bull,” Jefferson said.
Jefferson looked frustrated on the sidelines at times this past season. Then again, he’s been nothing but supportive of McCarthy.
Earlier in February, he admitted that while he doesn’t have any control over who’s behind center, he was going to do what he could to help McCarthy elevate his game.
“As of right now, J.J. is my QB. For me, it’s to get him to where we need to go; it starts off right now in the offseason and getting better now,” Jefferson said on “Up & Adams.”
The Vikings reportedly oversimplified the playbook to help McCarthy, but it didn’t work. Head coach Kevin O’Connell wasn’t so sure about the young quarterback, yet he was their only option.
And now that GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is no longer in the building, it’ll be interesting to see whether they bring in someone to compete with McCarthy in training camp.
