Caleb Williams is ready to lead the Chicago Bears into the future, regardless of where their next stadium is located.
“I’m going to play wherever there’s 120 by 53⅓ [yards] and it’s marked up with white lines and two end zones,” he said, per Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I’m OK with whatever. Whatever decision they make is whatever decision they make. I just want some green and my teammates and coaches and another team out there. And fans.”
The comments come after the Bears’ board of directors voted to continue exploring Hammond, Indiana, as a potential future destination.
“Bears president/CEO Kevin Warren told Illinois lawmakers he looked forward to continued conversations with them, and Gov. JB Pritzker said he’d call a special legislative session if politicians gain momentum on finding a way to give the team a property tax break,” Finley wrote.
“The Bears have said they consider Arlington Heights, and not Chicago, the only suitable choice in Cook County.”
That Williams didn’t reveal a preference between Hammond, Arlington Heights or Chicago comes as no surprise. After all, there isn’t much for the franchise quarterback to gain by taking a public position, which could undercut the team’s efforts in multiple locations and constantly be brought up in the future if he publicly backed a location that did not win out.
Instead, he is focusing on football, which is surely exactly what Bears fans want to hear.
The No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft just led Chicago to its first playoff victory since the 2010 campaign with a season that included a number of miraculous finishes and miracle plays.
That the playoff win came over the rival Green Bay Packers only further endeared him to Bears fans.
Now he will look to take the next step in his third overall season and second season with head coach Ben Johnson. If he does, the Bears could find themselves on the short list of Super Bowl contenders for years to come with a true franchise quarterback finally in place.
And if Williams brings home a Lombardi Trophy, there will be celebrations throughout Chicago regardless of where the team’s stadium is physically located.
