Once Cleveland Browns players end their summer breaks and report for training camp, the competition for the team’s starting quarterback job between veteran Deshaun Watson and second-year pro Shedeur Sanders will likely become one of the top summer storylines in the NFL.
In a recent video shared on his YouTube page, Sanders made it clear that he wants to be more than just a temporary option for the Browns or any club.
Shedeur Sanders wants to be “one of the greatest” amid the Deshaun Watson competition
“I’m not content just being on no team,” Sanders explained, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I’m trying to be one of the greatest. You’ve got to be thankful, but know there’s still more. There’s still more.”
Watson made what was referred to as a “significant” decision when he returned to the Cleveland area ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend to work out at the team’s facility during sessions that also featured Browns tight end Harold Fannin Jr. According to multiple reports, Watson is the favorite to win the starting job over Sanders ultimately. That said, Sanders should receive opportunities to further close the gap in the QB battle when the Browns open the preseason with a matchup at the Chicago Bears
on Aug. 15.
How Shedeur Sanders wants to be happy amid uncertainty about the future
“Sometimes when not everybody has the same perspective and sees things how you see it, because you seeing success is a disconnect,” Sanders added, according to J.R. DeGroote of Heavy. “That’s where you lose in life: comparison. When I compare my situation in life or anything, or even in football to somebody else’s, then at that point, I would never be happy. The best thing I got out of everything is more tools I could use in life and understanding. I was able to understand a lot of things from a different point of view.”
Both Sanders and Watson are expected to get together with offensive teammates for passing sessions later in July. Per the NFL’s website, veteran Browns players are due to report for training camp on July 28.
It could be interesting to see what else Sanders does and/or doesn’t have to say about his situation before the final Tuesday of the month arrives.
