Deebo Samuel announced his return to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday via Instagram.
Samuel signed a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The former South Carolina star spent his first six seasons with the 49ers before they traded him to the Washington Commanders in March 2025. He became a free agent this offseason and has now re-signed with his old team.
Samuel played a big part in the 49ers’ success during his time in town. San Francisco went to the NFC Championship Game four times, winning it twice. His best season was 2021, when Samuel earned All-Pro First Team honors thanks to 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. Samuel also added 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023, when the 49ers went to the Super Bowl.
He had a year away from the team, but Samuel now returns to a 49ers squad that needs some help.
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, the team’s first-round pick in 2024, is dealing with a knee ailment that could cost him all of 2026, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
So Samuel brings a needed reinforcement to San Francisco as the 49ers, who won 12 games and made the NFC Divisional round, looks to improve upon last season.
Samuel joins a remade wideout room that also includes some new additions in veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling.
