If the Patriots are to win tomorrow’s divisional clash with the Bills, they will do so with a shorthanded defense. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore will be sidelined for Week 4.
Both players are dealing with shoulder injuries. Neither took part in practice over the past three days, making it no surprise when they were ruled out. This will be the first missed game of the 2026 season in each case.
Gonzalez inked an extension averaging $33.75MM per year as one of several beneficiaries from the numerous jumps in the cornerback market this offseason. He now leads the way in terms of annual compensation at that position. The 24-year-old has totaled five pass deflections so far while posting strong numbers in coverage as expected.
Barmore enjoyed a full campaign in 2025 after being limited to four games the previous season. The former second-rounder was a full-time starter last year, although his defensive snap share has seen a drop (to 52%) early in 2026. Barmore’s absence will still be felt by a Patriots defense which has found success in a few areas so far but ranks just 17th against the run.
In other lineup news, head coach Mike Vrabel said (via Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald) New England will use both Walter Rouse and Ben Brown at right guard on Sunday. Greg Van Roten was injured while working as Mike Onwenu’s replacement, creating the need for a new plan at that spot. Moving left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to the right side is not under consideration at this time, Vrabel added.
